Private James McKenzie

Auckland Infantry Regiment

When the war ended,  McKenzie passed through numerous French towns, witnessing firsthand the destruction and sabotage inflicted by the Germans.

Since this story was recorded, several corrections have been noted. Jim was probably already 40 when he joined the army, and he may in fact have taken part in the capture of Le Quesnoy (he may have been in rest camp earlier). His future wife, Alice White, was an acquaintance but not his ‘sweetheart’ at the time he was writing to her. (updated October 2025)
